Important breakthrough for Connolly in USA

The declaration on St. Patrick’s Day of active support for Connolly by two leading US labor organisations is a very positive step towards building a potential audience for the movie in the USA and promoting interest among investors in North America.

Two identifiable core audiences for Connolly are among the Irish Diaspora (the second largest ethnic group in the US, numbering approximately 44 million) and the US labor union movement (16 million members).

Irish trade unionists, prominent among them Noirin Greene (Amicus), Joe O’Flynn (General Secretary of SIPTU), Steve Fitzpatrick (General Secretary of the CWU) and former General Secretary of SIPTU, Des Geraghty, have advocated strongly among their US counterparts for support for Connolly and Tom, Frank and Adrian are grateful for the solid work that they, and others, have done in the US on behalf of the Connolly movie.

In New York, Noirin Greene of Amicus accepted the symbolic first US Labor investments in Connolly from Joe Jamison, President of the Irish-American Labor Coalition and Dan Kane Sr., Vice President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. Joe Jamison and Dan Kane, both highly influential in Irish-American and in US Labor circles, will be key to the success of the Connolly movie in the USA. Their involvement is very much appreciated by Tom, Frank and Adrian.

US Labor Organizations Contribute to James Connolly Film

On Saturday, March 17 two US labor groups, the Irish-American Labor Coalition (IALC) and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, each made a $10,000 investment toward the forthcoming film, “Connolly,” to be produced by Rascal Films.
At an evening reception, Dan Kane, Sr., recently elected to the national executive of the Teamsters, announced that his union was making a donation of $10,000. “We want to do all we can to help bring this film to the screen. For example, the success of “The Wind That Shakes the Barley” shows that the film-going public is hungry for passionate, truthful films about the Irish struggle. James Connolly belongs to the world labor movement. He organized workers in the US, in Scotland, and in Ireland -- among both traditions. In America he organized transport workers. He was a working-class hero, a larger-than-life figure. His life can inspire young people. It’s time the wider world, not just union people and not just Irish people, knew about him.”
At its yearly St Patrick’s Day breakfast Joe Jamison, IALC president, declared, "This sum is only a drop in the bucket compared to actual funding needs. We are following the lead of Irish trade unions. In Ireland, SIPTU, the CWU and others have already pledged large amounts. We hope our modest gesture can encourage, first, more trade union subscriptions; second, the support of the Irish Film Board; and third, independent film private investors.” This is only the latest effort by the IALC to promote the legacy of James Connolly among the Irish-American community and the US public. It marches behind the Connolly banner each year in the country's largest St Patrick’s Day Parade. It has organized Connolly Commemorations. It has helped to build two monuments to Connolly, one outside Liberty Hall in Dublin and one in Troy, New York where he lived and worked early in the last century.
Visiting trade unionists from Ireland and Britain, including such unions as SIPTU, Amicus, Impact, RMT, and Irish teacher unions were present at the two events. They also pledged to redouble efforts to build support for the film. The screenplay, the casting, and much of the other planning for “Connolly” have already been completed. Financing is now the last hurdle. More information about the film project and how unions can support it can be obtained at www.rascal-films.com.
